Instructions for Voice Over Donors

Thank you for all your support of Blade of Honor over the last weeks and for your donation(s) which include doing a voice over on the ship, hearing your name on the ship, or both! What follows are simple instructions for making the Voice Over happen for those of you whose voice will be heard, and for those who will have their name heard on the ship!

As a reminder, we’re “In Demand” on IndieGoGo right now, which means your community can still support Blade of Honor and help us get to our next stretch goal – which helps us with the marketing and promotion of the episode once it’s completed. Please continue sharing the campaign in your community. And thank you again for all you’ve done for us!

VO Reward Delivery Instructions

If you go to the campaign you’ll notice that the VO rewards have been hidden. We’ve closed off any more donors to those items, so you are among the elite! Once your perk has been fulfilled, we’ll notify you where it is, and you can show it off to all your friends and family!

Get Your Name AND Voice Heard On The Ship
If you have this reward, please consider both the following instructions to apply to you.

Have Your Name Heard On The Ship
If you have this reward, please send an e-mail to this address:
with the following subject:
“RE: BLADE OF HONOR VO RESPONSE”
(You can click on this link and it’ll be created for you)

Please include your name as you’d like it to be said including any pronunciation issues which we might run into – we’d like to get your name right!
Also please include any actor you’d like to share the scene with. We can’t guarantee you’ll get it, but it will help us to do so if we can.

Have Your Voice Heard On the Ship
If you have this reward, please send an e-mail to this address:
with the following subject:
“RE: BLADE OF HONOR VO RESPONSE”
(You can click on this link and it’ll be created for you)

Please include any actor you’d like to share the scene with. We can’t guarantee you’ll get it, but it will help us to do so if we can.

Once we receive your e-mail, we will fashion a script for you to read. There may be several entries, and if you’d be kind enough to read them all, that will give us lots of flexibility.

What you need:
For doing the recording itself, you don’t need fancy recording equipment at all. If you have a post 2014 cell phone (especially iPhone) that will do. If you DO have professional gear, GREAT!

How to do it:
You can record using the microphone on the headphones which came with you phone – please do NOT record with the phone alone. If you have a nice closet you can wedge yourself into, please do that. Otherwise, somewhere quiet is best. In your car is usually not a good place, please it’s very sound-reflective in there and it’ll only end up sounding like you’re in a car. Weird. I know. But trust us on this.

The microphone for the headphone is actually located on the little bulge/volume/activator on one of the cables on your headphones. If you don’t have one of these, please let us know. Hold the mic/cable about 6 -12 inches from your mouth. Don’t speak directly into the mic. instead, hold it 6 inches below your mouth and speak looking straight ahead – or “over the top of it.” this keeps the wind noise from “Ps” and “Fs” from ruining takes. We recommend you memorize the short lines you’ll be sent so you don’t have to hold paper in the other hand – holding paper near the mic also changes the sound negatively and rustling paper is easily heard.

Use your built in recording application. Do as many takes as you like. If you’re unsure of how to edit your audio or cannot, please verbally slate the takes which you liked best.

For example: if the script says “Captain Wood, please report to the infirmary…” You would do your various takes, and on the one you liked, you would say, “Captain Wood, please report to the infirmary….[take a pause] use that last one…” or whatever lets us know you liked the last one.

Once done, e-mail the clips to the same address above. If the file is more than 5 MB, please let us know and we’ll give you instructions for uploading to our secure server – or just use Dropbox/Google Drive etc.

Minimum Specs
For those who are tek minded, please keep these specs in mind as the minimum, and higher fidelity is best. If you have the choice please use “highest quality.” We can take anything up to 192kHz 24bit (if you dare). Minimums:

  • WAV/AIF/CAF = 16 bit/48 kHz
  • mp3 = 128kb/s
  • mp4/etc = mono 128kb/s

What You’ll Receive
You’ll be receiving a short script with a few bits to read. If you’ll read each one in the following ways:

1. Normal Apathetic Military Voice
2. In-a-Hurry voice. Not upset or anxious, just “I’m on my way somewhere right now…”
3. Sexy/Suave voice. Think Frank Sinatra – not Barry White.

Please don’t feel bad if what you send us doesn’t quite measure up sonically – and we ask you to redo your recording. We want this to be the best it can be, and we want to represent you and your reward as best as possible. If you follow the steps outlined above, you should be just fine!

The last instruction would be to HAVE FUN! Sometimes working in production is hard work, but it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun in the process!

Thanks again for your support of Blade of Honor, and your trust in us.
